Let us see some of the traditional sports in Karnataka and the physics behind them:

  • Chinni Dandu or Gilli Danda: It is played with two sticks by throwing a stick to the target with the help of another. In this game, Newton's Third Law of Motion plays a very important role because it decides the distance that the stick can travel with a particular force.
  • Buguri (Spinning the top): Here Centrifugal force and Centripetal force of the top and Torque applied by the rope onto the top plays a very major role in order to keep the top spinning.
  • Goti (Marbles): In this game, a marble is thrown to hit another marble to make it move away from the circle drawn. Here Frictional force and Conservation of momentum ( Momentum Transferred onto the other marble and direction in which it is transferred ) decide the game.
  • Kallu Gundu Ettuvudu (Stone Balls): This game is also similar to the Goti game where Frictional force and Conservation of momentum play a very important role.
  • Kabaddi: Kabaddi is a famous game all over our country where the Moment of Inertia of the Raider and Defender decides the game.
