Formula to find the refractive index of various liquids

U=sini/sinr=sin((a+d)/2)/sin(a/2)

Here,

U=refractive index of the liquid.

a= the angle of minimum deviation

d=angle of prism

i=angle of incidence

r=angle of refraction

Apparatus required:

  • Hallow glass prism
  • Bell pins
  • Drawing board
  • Liquids like water, benzaldehyde etc…

Procedure:

  1. As a first step fix a white sheet on the drawing board and keep the prism and mark its outline as ABC.
  2. Now draw a normal PQ on the AB side and draw an incidence angle according to the PQ. Place two pins to make it appear as a straight line.
  3. Now on the market out line ABC, place the prim that is filled with the given liquid either it is water on benzaldehyde.
  4. Now take the pins to place it on the side AC to make the four pins appear as same line.
  5. As a last step, just remove the pin and connect the points that obtained.
  6. Repeat the experiment with different liquids.
