Formula to find the refractive index of various liquids
U=sini/sinr=sin((a+d)/2)/sin(a/2)
Here,
U=refractive index of the liquid.
a= the angle of minimum deviation
d=angle of prism
i=angle of incidence
r=angle of refraction
Apparatus required:
- Hallow glass prism
- Bell pins
- Drawing board
- Liquids like water, benzaldehyde etc…
Procedure:
- As a first step fix a white sheet on the drawing board and keep the prism and mark its outline as ABC.
- Now draw a normal PQ on the AB side and draw an incidence angle according to the PQ. Place two pins to make it appear as a straight line.
- Now on the market out line ABC, place the prim that is filled with the given liquid either it is water on benzaldehyde.
- Now take the pins to place it on the side AC to make the four pins appear as same line.
- As a last step, just remove the pin and connect the points that obtained.
- Repeat the experiment with different liquids.
