With the single magnet, the iron filings form curvedlines beginning at one pole and ending at the other. When the two magnets are arranged with the like poles near each other, each magnet demonstrates the same curved lines from pole to pole, but the each magnet's lines bend away from the end of the opposing magnet. At each point, draw a short line in the direction of the compass needle. Joining the points together reveals the path of the magnetic field lines. Another way to visualize magnetic field lines is to sprinkle iron filings around a magnet, as shown at right.General Properties of Magnetic Lines of Force

They seek the path of least resistance between opposite magnetic poles. ...

They never cross one another.

They all have the same strength.

Their density decreases (they spread out) when they move from an area of higher permeability to an area of lower permeability.

Magnetic field lines are a visual tool used to represent magnetic fields. They describe the direction of the magnetic force on a north monopole at any given position. Because monopoles are not found to exist in nature, we also discuss alternate means to describe the field lines in the sections below.Just remember that between any two such field lines, the field strength is just as strong as on the linesthemselves. The field is smooth.) ... The clumping is NOT a property of the magnetic field from the largemagnet, it is a consequence of the magnetic fields of the small iron filings.
