The correct answer is "Heterotrophic"

Whales are large marine animals and mammals are heterotroph.

While phytoplanktons are autotrophs, it produces half the oxygen consumed by heterotrophs.

So that's the difference.

Whale is a vertebrate and they are hetetrophic. Phytoplankton is an invertebrate and they are autotrophic. Whales are endothermic because they generate internal body heat to stay warm but these characteristic is not present in phytoplanton.
