pi can be written in p/q because it basically is circumference by diameter...Why is it irrational?

Because π = 22/7 is a approximate value and not an exact value. Proof:- A general number divided by 7 starts recurring after a set of decimal digits but π does not start recurring. So, π is not equal to 22/7.
