Pi is rational or irrational?
Answers
Pi is an irrational number
Pi ( π )
Pi is an irrational number.
Earlier when Mathematicians were working on Circle topic, they observed a common thing in all circles. They observed that the ratio of circumference of a Circle to the Diameter of Circle is nearly constant for all Circles. They named this constant as 'π' or pi.
Circumference of Circle / Diameter = Constant
And this constant is π.
The use of π came into picture in many formulas of Science. The use of π as an irrational number was seeming difficult. So, mathematicians thought to give it an approx rational value.
As it is an irrational number, it can't be represented in form of rational number but mathematicians took an approx value which was 355/113.
Still, the purpose of taking π as rational value wasn't solved as it was difficult and time taking to calculate with 355/113. So, mathematicians chose another value which is equal to 22/7.
Till now, we use 22/7 as an approx value for π as it is easier to calculate with it.
Decimal representation of π never ends and never form a pattern, which again makes it unique.
It is considered as transcendental number as it is not root of any polynomial with rational coefficients.
Value of π till 20 decimals :-
3.14159265358979323846
Note :-
π is not equal to 355/113 or 22/7 as it is an irrational number.
π is less than 22/7.
