Answer: The piper played a strange music. The first time he played the tune all the rats in the town followed
him and rushed past him and fell into the river. The second time he played the tune, the children of the town
followed him into a cave and disappeared.
5. What had the piper promised the children?
Answer: The piper had promised to lead the children to a wonderful, new country.
6. Did the people of Hamelin keep their promise? How did they suffer?
Answer: The people of Hamelin did not keep their promise as they did not give the piper the five hundred
guilders. Instead they urged the Mayor to give him five guilders and send him away. They lost their children
who followed the piper into the cave and disappeared.
