 pin and nail have pointed ends so that the area of contact between the pin or nail and the object becomes less and therefore the pressure becomes more as pressure is inversely proportional to area.

 Therefore, it can easily penetrate through the object.

Pins and nails have pointed ends so that they can penetrate through objects. That will let things, papers stick together or stuck on wall or whatever one wishes.

Scientifically, the pressure is less on pointed ends than thick ends.
