Hence they can tolerate some mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood. But in the case of aves and mammals, energy demand is very high (since the have to maintain their body temperature-warm blooded).Hence they cannot tolerate mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood. Therefore they have 4 chambers.
