Pitcher plants are naturally carnivorous, which means they are carnivorous plants along with Venus fly traps, sunders, etc. They are still able to use photosynthesis, but are much less efficient at it. This diet change is the result of thousands of years of natural selection and , evolution, which cause many adaptations that helped the pitcher plant eat insects.
