AnsWer :

Distance = 10 m

And Displacement = √18 m.

Concepts Required :

  • Distance - Total distance cover by body, it said to be Distance.
  • Displacement - Shortest distance cover by body intial to final point, it said to be Displacement.

Solution :

For Distance,

Turtle crawls 5m North, then 3m East and then 2m south.

Sum of all distance cover by Turtle.

 \tt\dashrightarrow 5 + 2 + 3 = 10 \: m.

For Displacement,

  • We have 90° with angle DEC.
  • Apply Pythagoras theorem.

 \tt \dashrightarrow {H  }^{2} ={ P }^{2}  +{ B }^{2} .

  • P = 3m.
  • B = 3m.
  • H = ?.

\tt\dashrightarrow  {h}^{2}  =  {(3)}^{2}  +  {(3)}^{2} .

\tt\dashrightarrow  {h}^{2}  = 9 + 9.

\tt\dashrightarrow{ h }^{2}  = 18.

\tt\dashrightarrow h =  \sqrt{18}  \: m.

Therefore, the value of Distance cover by Turtle be 10 m and Displacement be √18 m.

We know,

Displacement is the shortest length between the initial and the final point.

∴ Shortest length = AD

Here, in △AED,

AD² = AE² + DE² {Pythagoras theorem}

(∵ ∠AED forms 90°)

And, AE = AB - BE = (5 - 2) m = 3 m

∴ AD = √[(3 m)² + (3 m)²] = √9 + 9 m² = √18 m²

⇒ AD = (3√2) m.

∴ The displacement is (3√2) m.
