  • On Sunday, April 2, 1865, in Petersburg, Virginia, Ulysses Grant 's army struck Confederate Positions. The Confederate troops started to leave the city in the middle of the afternoon. The success of the Union assured the collapse of Richmond, the Confederation 's capital situated just 25 miles north of Petersburg.
  • General Confederate Robert Lee negotiated on the surrender of his Northern Army on 9th April 1865 and put a symbolic end to the Civil War. The ultimate surrender of Confederate forces took place in phases over the next 2 months, and after Lee had met Union General Ulysses Grant at "Appomattox Court House", other Confederate Armies had signed "surrender agreements".
  • On 14 April 1865, while performing in the play at Ford's Theater in Washington , DC, Abraham Lincoln, the US President, was killed by the popular stage actor "John Wilkes Booth". An adherent to slavery, Booth thought Lincoln was resolved to overthrow the Constitution & to destroy his revered south.
