Answer:

I thought it was pretty amazing when hardware designers like Square figured out how to use a headphone jack to digest data from a simple credit card reader. Turns out that was just the beginning.

This week I discovered Lapka, a set of small, well-designed sensors that plug into your iPhone (or iPad, or iPod) to measure things like radiation, temperature, and humidity. Not only does Lapka measure these things, but it presents the results in pretty, easily understood graphical representations to quickly show you what’s going on with the invisible world around you. And of course it’s all shareable across your social graph.

Launched last month, Lapka has five sensors: radiation, temp/humidity, electromagnetic fields, and even one that you stick in a piece of produce to measure its “organic-ness” (aka the concentration of nitrates). I imagine this lovely little tool will make an appearance in this year’s WIRED store.

Bonus clip! I love the way they market this product.
