On 12 March, 1930, Mahatma Gandhi accompanied by 78 of his followers set out on foot to the coastal village of Dandi in Gujarat. On 6 April 1930, they reached Dandi and violated the Britisher's salt law and manufactured salt by boiling sea water. The name comes from the location where the act of defiance was executed
