it is because with the help of placenta foetus is connected with mother and through this foetus obtain nutrients, oxygen from mother and excretion also occur through this.

Placenta is a structure which are produced by the fusion of uterine endometrium with an extra embryonic foetal membranes like chorion, for physiological exchange between both, the foetus and the mother's blood. It is has the following two parts maternal and foetal.
The foetus is quite attached to the uterine wall by placenta. It is shaped like a disc and has a number of finger-like chorionic villi. The villi has been continuously supplied by rich blood capillaries. Since, it is a structural and functional unit of the foetus or fetus and an excellent maternal substantiate it is often involved in the exchange of gases, exchange richly supplied nutrients and the internal support of giving a passive acquired immunity to the growing foetus.
