places A and B are 100km apart on a highway. One car starts from A and another from B at the same time. If cars travel in the same direction at different speeds, they meet in 5 hours. If they travel towards each other, they meet in one hour. What are the speeds of the two cars?

 \bf{step \: by \: step \: explanation}

Let the speed of car A be x

And speed of car B be y

Case 1
__________________________________

A_____________________B___P

AB = AP-BP

100=5(x-y)

x-y=100/5

x-y=20----------(1)

Case 2

__________________________________

Speed= x+y

Hence,

Time= distance/speed

1=100/x+y

x+y=100------(2)

from equation 1 and 2

x-y=20
x+y=100
__________

2y=80

y=80/2

y=40 km/h

Now put the value of y in equation 1

x-40=20

x=20+40

x=60 km/h
