Places A and B are 30km apart and they are on a straight road. Hamid travels from A to B on bike. At the same time Joseph start from B on bike, travel towards A. They meet each other after 20 minutes. If Joseph would have started from B at the same time but in the opposite direction. Hamid would have caught him after 3 hours. Let speed of Hamis be h and that of Joseph be j.
When approaching each other, combined speed = h + j
(as speeds add when in opposite directions)
Time they take to meet = 30 ÷ (h + j) = 20 mins
30 ÷ (h + j) = 1/3
h + j = 90 .....(1)
Now, when they are in same direction, combined speed = h - j
(we know that h > j because Hamid catches up Joseph when going in same direction)
time taken to meet = 30 ÷ (h - j) = 3
h - j = 10.....(2)
Solving (1) and (2) we get
2h = 100
h = 50
and j = 50 -10 = 40
Therefore speeds of Hamid and Joseph are 50 km/hr and 40 km/hr.
