If they move towards each other

Their distances from each other = 80km/hrs

[Distance = speed × time]

Distance travelled by 1st car - distance travelled by 2nd car= 80

8x - 8y = 80

8 (x-y) = 80

x-y = 10 -eq(1)

If they move in opposite direction

Time = 1hr 20min

= 1 + 20/60

= 1 + 1/3

= 4/3 hrs

= 4/3x + 4/3xy = 80

= 4/3 (x+y) = 80

= x+y = 80×3/4

= x+y = 240/4

=x+y = 60 -eq(2)

Adding eq (1) and (2)

(x-y) + (x+y) = 60 + 10

2x = 70

x = 35

Putting the value of x in equal (1)

x - y = 10

35 - y = 10

-y = 10 - 35

-y = -25

y = 25

Hence, the speed of 1st car is 35km/hr and the speed of the 2nd car is 25km/hr.
