The radiation coming from the sun at the equator , falls on the surface of earth at nearly perpendicular directions (making an angle of ninety degrees) and thus concentrated over a very small area . Therefore the places nearer the equator are warmer.

Air above the equator is hot and thus it rises up. Since hot air contains more moisture . So when it cools, it is difficult to hold all the moisture and it rains.
