Places on the Eastern Side of the western Ghats have a low rainfall.

  • The eastern slopes of the Western Ghats have relatively low rainfall due to  their leeward location.
  • The Western Ghats block rain-bearing winds on the western slopes which cause rainfall.
  • Whereas the Southwestern monsoon passes parallel to the Eastern Ghats, which generates less rainfall as it is unable to block moisture-laden winds in the Eastern Ghats.
  • It is also known as the rain shadow area, because the strong rain-bearing clouds in the east are forced to rise and dump much of their rain on the windward side.
