Planning is looking ahead, whereas controlling is looking back.

Firstly, understand,

about planning process and controlling process.

PLANNING: It is the first function of management. Planning is deciding in the present, what is to be done in the future. It is basically, a process of 'thinking before doing'. It bridges the gap between where we are and where we want to go.

CONTROLLING: It is the last function of management. Controlling refers to comparison of actual performance with the planned performance and taking corrective actions, in case of deviations between actual and planned performance.

Thus, it is a backward looking function but the statement "Planning is looking ahead and controlling is looking back" is partially correct because it should be understood that planning is glided by past experiences and the corrective action initiated by control function which aims to improve future performance.

So, planning and controlling are both backward looking as well as forward looking function.

Planning is looking ahead because it is for activity which is to be performed in the future. For a starting a project or production of a product it starts with a process of planning

Controlling is looking backwards since it is based on past performances that are set in their specific standards. It is important to keep a control on the working and the costs involved with the project.

Explanation:

  • Planning is always forward looking because to start an activity or a project it starts with the process of planning. The project cannot move ahead with a proper plan in place. On the other hand controlling is looking back since it based on the earlier performances and the standards of the systems
  • Controlling assess the earlier activities and analysis them for setting the standards for the the future activities. That is why it is termed as backward looking function since it evaluates the performances and establishes the reason for an changes
  • Planning is used for setting the objectives of the processes for the project on hand. It is used for determining scope of the project on hand, selecting an investment plan and working on a budget. The plans are made for the operations and the actions to be implemented.
