Guard cells control the opening of the stomata, which let in CO2. Palisade cells contain chloroplasts which carry out photosysntheis.  Glucose is converted to sucrose, which is transported to other parts of the plant. The sugar is used for new growth or stored in the roots as starch. In sugarcane, the sucrose is stored in the stem unchanged. The root end of the stem is the sweetest.

Hope this helps :)
