The roots of a plant have small hair - like particles, or say small hairs that absorb water from the soil. Then the water is sent to the leaves by two forces, a push and a pull. A push, by the lower level water that pushes the sap, and, a pull, from the upper low - pressure like region that pulls the sap. So, this is how the water, in the form of sap, reaches the tree top.
