I can recall one such incident. I would like to share my experience of helping an old lady who was a stranger to me.

I still remember the incident vividly. A few months ago I was returning home from my class. To my surprise, the apartment elevator repair work was in progress and when I was about to take the stairs, I found an old lady with her trolleys and bags trying to do the same.

She was weak and hesitant to take the stairs as her bags and trolleys were quite heavy and she was trying to lift them without any success. I felt the inner voice telling me to help her and I cordially asked her if I could assist her in taking the stairs.

Then I carried her luggage up the apartment stairs as she gradually ascended behind me, holding the stair railings.

At the end of the stairs, I handed the belongings back to the old aunty and she instinctively said ‘thank you so much, beta’. I think she was so glad to have someone to help her ascend the stairs as she thanked me profoundly a few more times.

It was in the Summer this year, I was getting late for my work. I was in such a hurry that I forgot to have the house keys. When after work, I came back home I was outside home waiting for my maid to come with the spare keys.

I was starving and not feeling okay. I went to the neighbour next door. And surprisingly the person next door was the same old aunty whom I helped once. She recognised me instantly. She took me to her house and asked me if I was hungry. Then she fed me delicious food and took care of me. She was very happy having me there. We spoke about a lot of things and later she told me to rest there till I felt okay.

After a few hours, I got the spare keys and went back to my home thanking that old aunty.

I was really happy and I realised probably that was the return gift of my selfless help to the lady. Honestly speaking, I think being able to help someone needy is a surge of joy that most often possessed me. It feels nothing less than an outstanding achievement.

Explanation:

  • Helping someone gives a sense of responsibility and pride to be a part of the world.
  • Helping others directly benefits and activates a brain region that has previously been linked to parental care behaviours.
  • I firmly believe helping others is a quality that makes us human and it gives us a feeling of inner peace, happiness and satisfaction that we can not feel in any other way.
  • So, It's better to lend a helping hand to others, whenever possible.
