Answer:

Plants need nitrogen for synthesizing protein, but they cannot make use of free atmospheric nitrogen. They obtain it only in the form of nitrate (NO3-) from the soil through  bacteria. The nitrates are replenished in the soil by bacteria through the process of fixation which converts the nitrogenous waste and dead remains of plant and animals first into ammonia (NH3) and then to nitrite (NO2-). This is brought about by bacteria such as Nitrobacter and Nitrosomonas.
