No, plants cannot absorb nitrogen directly from the atmosphere. A bacterium called Rhizobium converts nitrogen from the atmosphere into a soluble form which plants can take easily. The plants, in turn, give the Rhizobium food and shelter and this is called Symbiotic Relationship.
