No they cannot absorb nitrogen directly from air. they absorb nitrogen from soil in the form of nitrogenous salts.

some plants ( mainly pulses) are known as leguminous plant s have a symbiotic association with bacteria called rhizobium . rhizobium convrets the nitrogen in the air into a soluble form for the plants in turn the plant provides water and shelter for the bacteria
