Plants need nitrogen to make their protein .can they absorb nitrogen from the atmosphere

No they can not absorb nitrogen directly from the atmosphere but there is a bacteria called rhizobium in the roots of plants in soil which coverts nitrogen into nitrates. and these nitrates are then absorbed by plants.
