Plants were given Latin names because the genus and species system of naming plants was developed by a Swedish botanist, Carolus Linnaeus.

Moreover Scientific Latin plant names helped the scientists to describe both the “genus” and “species” of plants in order to categorize them in a better way which was easy to understand universally.

Also the genus name should always be underlined or italicized. This nomenclature was developed in the 1700’s.
