What are cloning vectors ?

Vectors is a term in biology used for carrier . As the carrier of disease malaria , Female Anopheles mosquito is the vector of malaria . Hence , when we say cloning vectors , we mean the carrier which can carry the DNA fragment containing gene of interest and help in cloning of it by multiple replications .

The other common cloning vector used than plasmid is bacteriophages . Bacteriophages are the viruses that infect Bacteria . The desired gene of interest is made to attach to the cloning vectors to pass to the host cell in which these cloning vectors help in cloning and act as vector or carrier .

Plasmid is an extra chromosomal DNA found in bacterial cells which can multiply independently . A cell may have 15-100 copy numbers of plasmid. Bacteriophages are more efficient in producing more clones because of their high copy number .

When the gene of interest is made to combine with plasmids (or bacteriophages) to make recombinant DNA , these plasmids replicate independent of chromosomal DNA ( Bacteriophages multiply) , hence making clones of rDNA in the host cell .
