Plasmolysis describes the pulling away of the cytoplasm from the cell wall, due to a loss of volume caused by water loss from the cell. The water loss is due to the movement of water out of the cell, down a concentration gradient via osmosis. It normally occurs when the cell is placed into a hypertonic solution. E.g. saltwater.
