the northern Rivers are mostly Himalayan or at least tributaries of Himalayan rivers.the 3 major rivers ( the ganga. Indus n bramhaputra) all take there birth up among those steep peaks which rises among the thousands of meters.
there rivers are fed by glacial lakes and glacial beds with hold huge swaths of fresh water
the Himalayan region actually consists of the largest glaciers outside polar region of the world.!!! the tall barrier of Himalaya resist the crossing of heavy cloud which brings the water from the Indian ocean. this causes them drain the land south of the Himalaya. this is what leads to the gangentic plain being one of the most fertile land on earth
