SoluTion :-

\textsf {Let the number be x}\\\\\\\sf {So, \ one-third \ of \ the \ number = \frac{1}{3} \times x  =\frac{1x}{3} }\\\\\\\sf {And, \ one - eighth \ of \ the \ number = \frac{1}{8} \times x =\frac{1x}{8} }

According to the question,

\sf {\to \dfrac{1x}{3} \times \dfrac{1x}{8}=864  }\\\\\\\sf {\to \dfrac{x^{2}}{3 \times 8}=864 }\\\\\\\sf {\to x^{2}=864 \times 3 \times 8}\\\\\\\sf {\to x^{2}=(36 \times 24)\times 24}\\\\\\\sf {\to x^{2}=6^{2} \times 24^{2}}\\\\\\\sf {\to x^{2}=144^{2}}\\\\\\\sf {\to x^{2}=  \ 144}

Thus, the number is 144.

Verification :-

\sf {\dfrac{1}{3}(144) \times \dfrac{1}{8} (144)=864 }\\\\\\\\\sf {\to \dfrac {144}{3} \times \dfrac{144}{8} }\\\\\\\\\sf {\to 48 \times 18=864}\\\\\\\sf {\to 864=864}

Hence, verified.
