Homologous series of hydrocarbons have a same general formula. They are called so because of this. Also, they have have a common difference of CH₂ unit.

Alkane series

E.g. Methane (CH₄)

Ethane(C₂H₆)

1. Physical Properties: The melting point and boiling point determines the physical properties of them. It increases gradually per every member.

2. Chemical Properties: Each of their formula determines their chemical properties. The formula gradually becomes complex and increase by a common unit of CH₂.
