If 3/8 of the book were read the first day, then 5/8 remained.

4/5 of 5/8 = 4/5 * 5/8 = 4/8

So now 3/8 + 4/8 = 7/8 have been read.

The 30 pages that remain must be 1/8 of the total.

So if p is the total number of pages:

p/8 = 30

p = 240 pages

First Day Read = 3/8 * X
Second Day Read,
(X - 3X/8) * 4/5 = X/2
Remaining = 30 Pages.
Total Pages = First day Read + Second Day Read + remaining Pages
X = 3X/8 + X/2 + 30
X - 3X/8 - X/2 = 30
(8X - 3X - 4X)/8 = 30
X = 30 * 8
X = 240.
Total Page = 240.
