Question

A body starting from rest travels with uniform acceleration. If it travels 100 m in 5 s, what is the value of acceleration.

Answer

Given that

Initial velocity (u) = 0 m/s (as the body is starting from rest).

Distance (s) = 100 m

Time (t) = 5 s

To find

Acceleration = ?

We can calculate the acceleration by using the following formulae,

(i) v = u + at

(ii) s = ut +  \frac{1}{2} at²

(iii) 2as = v² - u²

But we can also calculate the acceleration by using second equation of motion.

By usin' second equation of motion,

s = ut +  \frac{1}{2} at²

100 m =  0 \times 5 + \frac{1}{2} \times a \times 5 \times 5

100 m =  0 + \frac{1}{2} \times 25 \times a

100 m =  \frac{1}{2} \times 25 \times a

100 m =  \frac{1}{\cancel{2}} \times \cancel{25} \times a

100 m = 12.5a

 \frac{100}{12.5} = a

 \frac{\cancel{100}}{\cancel{12.5}} = a

8 = a

∴  a = 8 m/s²

 \boxed{\boxed{\pink{\huge{a = 8\:m/s^2}}}}
