x = (2+√5)^½ + (2-√5)^½

y = (2+√5)^½ -(2-√5)^½

Let,

(2+√5) = a

and (2-√5) = b

Now,

x²+ y²

we know,

(x+y)² = x²+y²+2xy

so, x²+y² = (x+y)²-2xy

=>(√a+√b+√a-√b)²-[2(√a+√b)(√a-√b)]

=>(2√a)²-[(2√a+2√b)(√a-√b)]

=>4a-[2√a(√a-√b)+2√b(√a-√b)

=>4a-[2a-2√a√b+2√b√a-2b)

=>4a-(2a-2b)

=>4a-2a+2b

Now, putting the values of a and b we get,

4(2+√5)-2(2+√5)+2(2-√5)

=>4(2+√5) -4-2√5+4-2√5

=>4(2+√5) -4√5

=>8+4√5-4√5

=>8

The answer is 8

Cheers!
