Let the numbers be a and b

According to question
a+b = 1000 ------(1)
a-b = 998 --------(2)

Adding equation 1 and 2, we get
2a = 1998

a = 999
b= 1

First number=999
Second number = 1

X + Y = 1000. (1)
X - Y = 998. (2)

From 1 eq..
X = 1000-Y
Put value of X in 2 eq.
1000 -Y -Y = 998
-2Y. = 998-1000
-2Y = -2
Y = 1

X = 1000-Y
= 1000 - 1
= 999
therefore , X = 999
Y = 1
