Overpopulation usually has an adverse effect on the environment, the economy and the quality of life that people lead. A larger population consumes more natural resources such as fresh water, arable land and mineral resources.

As more land is brought under cultivation, the amount of land under forests keep reducing , impacting the diverse animal and plant populations in these forests.

In developed countries the death rates have reduced and the lifespan of the people have increased due to improvements in medical facilities. As a result the number of elderly people has also increased tremendously. This has increased the financial burden on the governments as they now have to support and pay pensions to a large number of people.

Another characteristic that helps us to study the population is called sex ratio. It reflects the comparative number of males and females in the population. In India sex ratio is calculated in terms of females per 1000 males. For instance, when we say that the sex ratio in India is 940 it means that there are 940 girls for every 1000 boys.

The sex ratio is considered favourable if there is an equal or higher number of females per 1000 males in the population.

An adverse or unfavorable sex ratio means that there is a lower number of females per 1000 males in the population.
