8. a) Thomson model of an atom

this model can be compared to a water melon in which the red portion represents positive sphere. the black seeds look like the electrons embedded in an atom

According to Thomson,

1. an atom consists of a positively charged sphere with electrons embedded in it.

2. the positive and negative charges are equal in magnitude, hence the atom is electrically neutral

b) limitations of Thomson's model

1. it failed to explain how the positively charged sphere is shielded from the negatively charged elelctrons without getting neutralised

2. it doesn't explain about the neutral particles called neutrons
