1. Define the term volume of an object.

Answer→ Volume is defined as the amount of space taken up by an object. It is most often described in terms of meters cubed (m³).

_______________

2. State and define the S.I. unit of volume.

Answer→ The S.I unit of volume is meter^3. (m³)

The derived SI unit for volume is the cubic meter based on the three dimensional use of the base unit for length, the meter. The more common metric unit for volume is the liter.

So, the SI unite of volume is m³.

_______________

3. State two smaller units of volume. How are they related to the S.I. unit?

Answer→ A smaller unit of volume is cubic centimeter and cubic decimeter. One cubic centimeter is the volume of a cube of each side 1 centimeter

\sf{1\ m^3=1\ m \times 1\ m \times \times 1\ m}1 m

=1 m×1 m××1 m

\begin{gathered}\sf{\implies 1\ m^3=100\ cm\times100\ cm\times100\ cm}\\\\\sf{\implies 1\ m^3=10^6\ cm^3}\end{gathered}

⟹1 m

Relationship between m³ and dm³

We know that,

\begin{gathered}\sf{1\ m=10\ dm}\\\\\sf{\implies 1\ m^3= 1\ m\times1\ m\times1\ m}\\\\\sf{\implies 1\ m^3= 10\ dm\times10\ dm\times10\ dm}\\\\\sf{\implies 1\ m^3=10^3\ dm^3}\end{gathered}

1 m=10 dm

⟹1 m

=1 m×1 m×1 m

⟹1 m

=10 dm×10 dm×10 dm

⟹1 m

4. How will you determine the volume of a cuboid ? Write the formula you will use.

Answer→ Volume of Cuboid = (l × b × h)

Where,

l = length

b = breadth

h = height

_______________

5. Name two devices which are used to measure the volume of an object. Draw their neat diagrams.

Answer→ Devices used to measure volume of an object :-

Measuring cylinders

Measuring beakers

_______________

6. How can you determine the volume of an irregular solid (say a piece of brass) ? Describe in steps with neat diagrams.

Answer→ To measure the volume of a piece of stone. Take a piece of brass, a measuring cylinder, fine thread of sufficient length and some water. Place a measuring cylinder on a flat horizontal surface and fill it partially with water. Note the reading of the water level very carefully. Now tie the piece of brass with a thread and dip it completely into water. We see that the level of water rises. Note the reading of the new water level.

(refer to the second attachment)

The difference in the two levels of water gives the volume of the piece of brass Initial level of water = 60 ml

Level of water when brass is immersed = 80 ml

∴ Volume of water displaced = 80 ml – 60 ml = 20 ml

∴ Volume of the piece of brass = 20 cm³

Note : 1 ml = 1 cm³
