Answer:

Given:

A travelling wave Equation has been provided as follows :

y = 1.8 sin π(2t/5 - x/4)

To find:

  • Amplitude
  • Wavelength
  • Time period
  • Speed of wave

Concept:

First we should change the given Equation to a standard Equation of travelling wave :

y = 1.8 sin (2πt/5 - πx/4)

So now, we can compare it with the standard Equation :

y = A sin (ωt - kx)

Calculation:

After comparison, we get :

A = 1.8 metres

ω = 2π/5

k = π/4

Hence ,

Amplitude = A = 1.8 metres.

Let wavelength be λ

∴ λ = 2π/k

=> λ = 2π/(π/4)

=> λ = 8 metres.

Hence wavelength is 8 metres.

Let time period be T

∴ T = 2π/ω

=> T = 2π/(2π/5)

=> T = 5 seconds.

Hence Time period is 5 seconds.

Velocity be v

∴ v = ω/k

=> v = (2π/5)/(π/4)

=> v = 8/5

=> v = 1.6 metre/sec.

Hence Velocity is 1.6 m/s.
