The poet was afraid of the snake because he knew the natural instincts of the snake to hurt and according to the education he had gained, snakes would definitely hurt and therefore it had to be killed. He wanted to kill the snake on the basis of his education and he also attempted to do so. But he regretted at doing so. It was probably the feeling that he was alone that stopped him from hurting the creature.
