Groups- Elements in a same group i.e same vertical column will have same number of valence electrons. Now, as elements will have same number of valence electrons so they will be similar in chemical properties. Actually, chemical properties depend on number of valence electrons. Note, that it is written similar chemical properties not identical for eg first group elements i.e alkali metal such as Na, K, Rb, Cs and Fr. All these elements have one valence electron, so they all can form unipositive ion.

Periods- Elements in a same horizontal row are in same period. In each successive element electron enters in same shell. This means that all the elements in a particular period will have the similar number of shells.
