Question:
How does the rate of evaporation depends on:
- Surface area of the liquid
- Temperature
- Humidity
- Wind speed
- Nature of the liquid
Answer:
Evaporation:- When a liquid changes into its gaseous state below its boiling point, it is known as evaporation. It is a surface phenomenon. This means that the molecules with higher kinetic energy located on the topmost layer that is the surface of the liquid get evaporated.
➠Surface area of the liquid: Since evaporation is a surface phenomenon, rate of evaporation is directly proportional to surface area of the liquid.
➠Temperature: The more the temperature, the more is the kinetic energy of the molecules and hence evaporation is also more. Thus rate of evaporation is directly proportional to temperature.
➠Humidity: The amount of water vapour present in air is called humidity. The more the water vapour present in air (humidity), the less is the evaporation as that humid air already contains lots and lots of water vapour, making it hard for other molecules to evaporate as there is very little space left for them. Thus rate of humidity is indirectly proportional to humidity.
➠Wind Speed: Winds with high speeds blow away the water vapour present in the air and thus making space for new particles to evaporate. Thus rate of evaporation is directly proportional to wind speed.
➠Nature of the liquid: Rate of evaporation also depends upon the nature of liquid. Such as alcohol takes less time to evaporate than water.
