Area of square = a²

i) side is doubled
area =(2a)² = 4a²
area is quadripled or becomes four times

ii) side is halved
area=(a/2)² = a²/4
area becomes one-fourth

Area of a square = side * side

If the length of a side is halved, then the area becomes  1/2 * 1/2 = 1/4th. So it becomes 1/4th of previous area.

If the length of a side is doubled, then the area becomes 2 * 2 times or 4 times its previous area.
