The British had imposed a tax on the usage of salt, which was an important part of the diet. Enraged, Mahatma Gandhi had organised a salt March of about 210 km covered in 10 days, between Sabarmati and Sandi. It was an effective symbol of resistance as people from all walks of life, religions and castes had come together to protest against this blasphemous act and had eventually forced the British to give in and lift the tax.
