We know that ,
Work done = force × displacement
W = F × s
But, force = mass × acceleration
F = m × a
F = ma
acceleration = acceleration due to gravity
a = g
F = mg
also, displacement = height attained
s = h
Therefore we get ,
W = mg × h
W = mgh
Since work done is equal to energy consumed
Therefore,
P.E = mgh
or
U = mgh
