How do we get to know whether we have to use LCM or HCF in the world problems.

When they say to find greatest common multiple or highest common multiple...use HCF.....when they say to find the lowest common multiple or smallest common factor....use LCM

The number divides 167 and leaves 5 as remainder

Therefore, the number divides 167 - 5 = 162 exactly

The number also divides 95 leaving 5 as remainder

Therefore, the number divides 95 - 5 = 90 exactly

Now we have to find highest common factor (H.C.F.) of 162 and 90

Highest common factor (H.C.F.) of 90 and 162 = 18

Therefore, 18 is the required number.

Usually in the word problems the following key points should be remember÷
1) If maxmimum,highest,equally distribution ,factors etc. words used then it is HCF.
2) If minimum,lowest,multiple,rounds taken and reaching same points etc. used then it shold be LCM.
3) But these are usually case in higher difficulty it is needed to read question thoroughly and to ask teachers or elders.These rules may also vary.
