ANSWER

a) Definition: The process used to separate slightly larger particles from a mixture by hand is called handpicking. For example: Stone pieces can be separated from wheat or rice by handpicking.

Examples:

Separating rotten vegetables from basket of vegetables.

Separating the stones and insects from rice.

Separating green grapes from black grapes.

Separating red gram  from rice

b)Definition: Winnowing is the simple method of cleaning food materials from a mixture.Winnowing separate the grain from the husk because one particle is light and the other is heavy .

Examples:

1. To distinguish the chaff from (grain) with the aid of an air current.

2. Blow (crawl) off or off.

3. To analyze closely in order to distinguish the good from the bad; sift: up to six finalists, the judges won a thousand essays.

4. To blow on; fan: a winnowing breeze of the tall grass.

c) Definition: Sieving is a process by which fine particles are separated from bigger particles by using a sieve. It is used in flour mill or at construction sites. In flour mill, impurities like husks and stones are removed from wheat. Pebbles and stones are removed from sand by sieving.

Examples:

at home: draining the water from a pot of noodles.

construction site: separating fine gravel from coarse gravel.

laboratory: using filter paper to separate a liquid and precipitate.

school: separating the chalk from the chalk dust.

d) Definition Sedimentation: Sedimentation is defined as the separation process in which solids are separated from the liquid. All the solids settle down at the bottom of a beaker and on top, a clear layer of liquid is obtained.

Examples:

suppose if there is a beaker full of water and some salt put in it. Then you will wait for the sand to settle down (sedimentation)

Definition Decantation: Decantation is defined as the separation process in which two immiscible liquids are separated. This is done by pouring out the clear upper layer of liquid.

Examples:

(i) Decantation is used to separate insoluble solids or liquid from liquid. Rain water is a mixture of mud and water. It is purified by decantation.

(ii) Oil and water also get separated by this method because oil floats up.

e) Definition- Filtration is defined as the separation process in which insoluble impurities are separated from the solution. Filtration is done with the help of filter paper.

Examples:

Brewing coffee involves passing hot water through the ground coffee and a filter. ...

The kidneys are an example of a biological filter. ...

Air conditioners and many vacuum cleaners use HEPA filters to remove dust and pollen from the air.
